چکیده

INTRODUCTION Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a disease of the distal pulmonary arteries that results in an elevation in pulmonary arterial resistance and pressure [1]. Currently, right heart catheterization is the gold standard for assesment of PAH. The relative cross sectional area change (RAC) of the main pulmonary artery may be a useful non-invasive measure of PAH severity [2]. Here, we use magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to measure the cross sectional area of the main pulmonary artery (MPA) at different times during the cardiac cycle. Preliminary results on the utility of this metric are presented based on five PAH patients and four healthy controls.

Pulmonary arterial distensibility - 2D phase contrast vs 2D bSSFP

Background The pulmonary circulation is a highly compliant system that generates little resistance to blood flow. However, in the presence of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), blood pressure and vascular resistance in the pulmonary circulation are elevated. This leads to distension and stiffening of the main pulmonary artery (MPA) and vessel wall remodeling, which in itself may influence s...

Dobutamine stress MRI in pulmonary hypertension: relationships between stress pulmonary artery relative area change, RV performance, and 10-year survival

In pulmonary hypertension (PH), right ventricular (RV) performance determines survival. Pulmonary artery (PA) stiffening is an important biomechanical event in PH and also predicts survival based on the PA relative area change (RAC) measured at rest using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this exploratory study, we sought to generate novel hypotheses regarding the influence of stress RAC on ...

Assessment of Organ Specific Iron Overload in Transfusion-dependent Thalassemia by Magnetic Resonance Imaging Techniques

The consequence of repeated blood transfusions in thalassemia is iron overload in different organs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a reliable, non-invasive and accurate method for iron detection in various tissues, hence the introduction of MRI has revolutionized the management of these patients and improved the life expectancy of them. Cardiac MRI T2* has a profound effect not only on est...

Non-invasive measurement using cardiovascular magnetic resonance of changes in pulmonary artery stiffness with exercise

BACKGROUND Exercise stress tests are commonly used in clinical settings to monitor the functional state of the heart and vasculature. Large artery stiffness is one measure of arterial function that can be quantified noninvasively during exercise stress. Changes in proximal pulmonary artery stiffness are especially relevant to the progression of pulmonary hypertension (PH), since pulmonary arter...
